Journalist Nellie Bly went undercover in 1887 to investigate an insane asylum on an assignment for New York World. After getting herself committed by acting deranged, Bly uncovered the dark truth about the asylum. Patients were fed rotten food, subject to filthy living conditions, and abused by staff. Not only was this no place for the mentally ill to find treatment, Bly discovered it was the kind of place that could drive even a perfectly sane woman off the edge.

In 1888, Nellie Bly, a feisty, investigative reporter for Joseph Pulitzer's New York World newspaper, pitched a story idea of traveling around the world in 75 days to beat the record achieved by Phileas Fogg, the character in Verne's book. While the editor thought it a great idea, he naturally thought the trip should be made by a man. The idea was shelved for over a year.

Pioneering journalist Nellie Bly is best remembered for two "stunts": her undercover expose of the Blackwell's Island insane asylum, and her race around the world to beat the record set in Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days. Yet those events do not begin to grasp the scope of her career as a reporter.

In 1887 Nellie Bly, one of the first female newspaper writers, and a young reporter who would soon go on to make a career for herself as an investigative journalist and “stunt” reporter, had herself committed to the Blackwell’s Island Insane Asylum in New York. Her purpose was to discover what life was like for those who had been deemed insane. She was surprised to discover the depth of mistreatment of the patients. Available for the first time in 125 years, the Lost Novels of Nellie Bly! Pioneering undercover journalist Nellie Bly is rightly famous for exposing society's ills. From brutal insane asylums to corrupt politicians, she exposed all manner of frauds and charlatans. She was also a skilled interviewer and reporter. What no one has known was that she was also a novelist. This is because, of the twelve novels Bly wrote between 1889 and 1895, eleven have been lost. Until now.

During this talk, Iron John author Robert Bly gives a delicate and lively view of the fantastic flowering of feeling in 12th century Provence. The feeling thought, developed from Arabic, Gnostic, and Albigensian sources, blossoms as love poetry famous at that time. In this recording, Bly distinguishes between the literal mode, the psychological mode, and the mythological mode, and locates the “Amor” or ecstatic love in the latter, which led to Sufism among the Arabs.

Robert Bly is in beautiful form, reading seven of his own poems from Stealing Sugar from the Castle, and Coleman Barks reads some segments from the Shams Tabrizi Sayings, as well as Rumi poems.
