In der Außenstation auf der unwirtlichen Oberfläche eines Eisplaneten ist ein Mitglied eines Forschungsteams erfroren. Die Witwe Mrs. Domquist beauftragt Sherlock Holmes mit Nachforschungen über die Todesumstände ihres geliebten Mannes Derrin. Dieser ließ sich angeblich freiwillig für die Ewigkeit einfrieren. Mit Dr. Watson besucht der Meisterdetektiv das Grab und in weiterer Folge Personen, die der Verblichene vor seinem Ableben aufgesucht hat.

Auf Kepler-186f befindet sich eine unterirdische Militärstation, die eine Mittelalter-Gesellschaft von Ausgestoßenen an der Oberfläche überwacht. Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson wollen ein wenig Licht in deren dunkle Existenz bringen, doch just bei ihrer Ankunft liegt ein Ritter tot in seinem Bett. Holmes fühlt sich natürlich sofort verpflichtet, den offensichtlichen Mordfall aufzuklären.
