Frederic Henry, ein junger Amerikaner, verliebt sich im Lazarett in die englische Krankenschwester Catherine Barkley, nachdem er bei einem Sanitätseinsatz an der italienischen Front verletzt wurde. Zurück bei seiner Truppe erlebt er den feindlichen Durchbruch bei Caporetto und entkommt nur knapp der Erschießung als angeblicher Deserteur.

Schwer verletzt wartet der Schriftsteller Harry zu Füßen des Kilimandscharo auf sein Ende. Seine kreative Kraft ist längst erloschen: Seit er an der Seite einer reichen Frau ein luxuriöses Leben führt, hat er nichts mehr geschrieben. Ernest Bramah (1868-1942) was an English author of 21 novels and numerous short stories and features. His humorous works have been ranked with Jerome K Jerome, and W.W. Jacobs, his detective stories with Conan Doyle, his politico-science fiction with H.G. Wells and his supernatural stories with Algernon Blackwood. In his stories of detection, Bramah hit on the idea of a blind detective, Max Carrados, whose triumphs are all the more amazing because of his disability.

Hemingway skrev Der er ingen ende på Paris i 1960 på basis af nogle genfundne notater fra hans ungdomsår i Paris i årene 1921-1926, hvor han som nygift korrespondent startede sin litterære karriere. At have og ikke have er måske den elementært mest spændende og samtidig mest sociale af Hemingways romaner. Den handler om fiskeren Harry Morgan, der kæmper for at holde sig ovenpå og ernære familien under 30-ernes depression, hvilket tvinger ham ud i livsfarligt smugleri. Miljøet og kampen for eksistensen skildres realistisk, råt og brutalt, og handlingen er intens.

Om en gammel fiskers heroiske kamp med at fange en kæmpe sværdfisk og siden forsvare sin fangst mod de griske hajer. En saga om fiskeren og havet, en mytisk beretning om menneskets vilkår. Om mennesket , "der kan tilintetgøres, men ikke besejres.". Fortællingen fremstilles i en enkel og rolig stil uden et overflødigt ord.

Solen går sin gang, som var Hemingways første roman, beskriver en gruppe unge rodløse og desillusionerede amerikanske kunstneres hektiske, udsvævende liv i efterkrigstidens Paris og Spanien i 1920-erne.
