Nicolas Chamfort är en poet, journalist och franska moralist. Från och med några artiklar i encyklopedisk Journal och samarbete i franska ordförråd, han blev känd tidigt vunnit poesi pris vid akademin, den franska teatern gav det lyckades några komedier, och försökte i flera litterära ventures att leva. Före revolutionen var han en av författarna mer uppskattat av den parisiska salongerna, lysande och kvick, skrev han spelar. Invigd i frimureriet 1778 valdes han till den franska akademin i 1781 som ordförande No. 6.
