Having the first volume of this series discussed the events, the national developments, and the institutions which preceded the colonization of America, the next step is to describe the land and the people of America as they were found by the Europeans. The Case of Sunburn is a classic short story from the heyday of the sci-fi digest size magazines, originally published in the April 1957 issue of IF Worlds of Science Fiction. Fontenay (1917-2007) worked for several newspapers, was editor of the Nashville Tennessean, was with the Associated Press and Gannett News Service at one time.

Andrew Jefferson V. Offutt (1934-2013) - Offutt began publishing in 1954 with the story "And Gone Tomorrow" in IF. He was a prolific writer of science-fiction tales, adventure/fantasy (Conan), and erotica/porn (writing as John Cleve and other pseudonyms). He wrote novels in the Thieves World series and many others. "And Gone Tomorrow" is the $1,000 prize-winning story in IF's College Science Fiction Contest...which answers the theme question: "What will life in America be like 100 years from now?"
