On April 16, 1963, as the violent events of the Birmingham campaign unfolded in the city's streets, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., composed a letter from his prison cell in response to local religious leaders' criticism of the campaign. The resulting piece of extraordinary protest writing, "Letter from Birmingham Jail", was widely circulated and published in numerous periodicals. Martin Luther wrote his catechisms to provide religious instruction for children, as well new converts or others lacking a deep knowledge of the scripture. In the catechism, Luther tried to teach the basic doctrines that every Christian should know. Luther taught that it was the duty of every father to teach these basic doctrines to not only his children, but his servants on a weekly basis. Furthermore, fathers were admonished to question the children and hired help on these basic tenets of faith each week, to ensure that they knew them fully.

The Bondage of the Will was published in 1525 as a rebuttal to Desiderius Erasmus. The piece is known as one of the first discussions on free will and predestination during the Reformation.
