Conocidos sobre todo por sus colecciones de canciones y cuentos populares, así como por los trabajos de Jacob en la historia de la lingüística y de la filología alemanas, eran los dos hermanos mayores de un total de seis, hijos de un abogado y pastor de la Iglesia Calvinista.
