"The Rats in the Walls." Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) is a novelist famous for his horror stories, fantasy and science fiction. Although he was not famous during his lifetime, his work is now considered a classic of literature. Lovecraft's work has influenced many authors, including Stephen King, who considers him "the greatest craftsman of the classic horror story of the 20th century."

The story revolves around a young man who becomes obsessed with an abandoned crypt. Originally built to house the members of a powerful local family, the crypt was abandoned after a fire consumed the family’s home and compelled them to move away. Despite living in the local area and having an entirely different surname, the narrator of the story claims some spurious relation to the powerful family. With this obsession ingrained he starts to spend his nights loitering outside the crypt and dreaming up ways of gaining access.

H. P. Lovecraft, born August 20, 1890, began composing rudimentary horror tales by the age of 8. He’s best remembered for cooking up his very own genre, Cosmic Horror, featuring monsters so powerful and terrifying that just seeing them will likely drive you insane. Lovecraft in early adulthood was established in a reclusive 'nightbird' lifestyle without occupation or pursuit of romantic adventures. He was 31 at the time of his first publication in a professional magazine. By age 34, he was a regular contributor to newly founded Weird Tales magazine.
