It is summer in St Denis and Bruno is busy organising the annual village concert. He's hired a local Périgord folk group, Les Troubadours, to perform their latest hit 'A Song for Catalonia'. But when the song unexpectedly goes viral, the Spanish government, clamping down on the Catalonian bid for independence, bans Les Troubadours from performing it. The timing couldn't be worse, and Bruno finds himself under yet more pressure when a specialist sniper's bullet is found in a wrecked car near Bergerac.

Just before dawn one late-summer morning, Captain Bruno Courrèges is roused from sleep by the wail of the town siren atop the Mairie, summoning the volunteer firemen of St Denis. Bruno, the only policeman in the small Périgord town, follows the fire engines towards the site of a large barn, now engulfed in flames, the surrounding fields ablaze. Everything points to arson. A Californian wine maker is planning to buy up half the valley to create a huge wine-producing operation.

In the small town of St Denis, Bruno, can't get a moment's rest. Some rare bank notes have come to light that may have links to the legendary Neuvic train robbery in 1944. The investigation is fraught with issues. Bruno is also dealing with a wave of local burglaries, which have brought his old flame, Isabelle - and their complicated history - back to the town.

St Denis may be picturesque and sleepy, but it has more than its fair share of murder and mystery, as Bruno knows all too well. When Bruno is invited to the 90th birthday of a powerful local patriarch - a war hero with high-level political connections in France, Russia and Israel - he encounters a family with more secrets than even he had imagined.

But matters take a much darker turn when a horrific murder occurs, and Bruno has his work cut out to find the connection between present crimes and long-buried ones that are linked to France’s colonial past.

A missing art student. An international investigation. A secret that will shatter Bruno's charming village of St Denis. A rich American art student is found dead at the bottom of a well in an ancient hilltop castle. The young woman, Claudia, had been working in the archives of an eminent French art historian, a crippled Resistance war hero, at his art-filled chateau.

Life in south-west rural France is not the sleepy idyll you might suppose. Local duck and goose farms are being attacked by animal rights protestors attempting to halt the production of foie gras. A senior policeman has been shot by terrorists believed to be the Basque Separatists of ETA. And if that weren’t enough, a group of students have just unearthed a ‘modern’ skeleton during a dig at one of the ancient sites of this famous region and home to prehistoric man - a dig that has brought an influx of foreigners to the Dordogne.

The victim carries no identification and her fingerprints are not known to the French Police or Interpol.The only clue to the woman's identity is that her dentistry looks American, but Bruno's inquiries at local hotels and gites yield no trace of a missing foreign woman. The chateau of Commarque, begun in the 11th century, was founded by a Bishop of Sarlat and entrusted to the Knights Templar. In the rocks beneath it are caves.

Bruno Courrѐges is chief of police of the lovely Dordogne town of St Denis with a remit that covers the beautiful valley of the river Vézѐre. One autumn morning he comes across an abandoned car parked near a local beauty spot. Inside is a dead woman, Monique, an apparent suicide resulting from depression. But there are circumstances surrounding the death that raise Bruno's suspicions, particularly when disputes arise surrounding her Will.

Martin Hibbert was left paralysed from the waist down by the Manchester Arena bombing which killed twenty-two people on 22 May 2017. Martin’s teenage daughter Eve was one of the 940 injured, in Eve’s case, gravely. The dad from Bolton has since become a leading campaigner both for victims of the atrocity and those with spinal cord injuries. Determined to make a difference he took on the ultimate challenge, scaling Kilimanjaro in a wheelchair, becoming the second paraplegic to do so, and raising a million pounds for charity.

Bruno's archaeologist friend Clothilde asks him to help Abby, an American woman who wants to settle in the Perigord after a grim divorce back in the United States. Abby hopes to become an official tour guide in the region, specializing in American connections, from Thomas Jefferson to Henry Miller, from the Lindbergh family to the paratroopers who dropped into the region in the summer of 1944 to support the Resistance. But that long ago summer suddenly pushes its way into the present with the revelation of three sets of bones buried deep in the woods.

Bruno erholt sich noch von einer Schussverletzung, als ein geheimnisvoller Fund sein Interesse weckt: Bei einem verfallenen Schlösschen wird ein Grab mit drei Skeletten gefunden, offenbar aus dem 2. Bruno begibt sich auf Spurensuche in dunkle Zeiten, doch auch in der Gegenwart wird er dringend gebraucht: Internationale Besucher müssen mit Köstlichkeiten aus dem Périgord bewirtet werden, und die malerische Vézère schwillt zu einem reißenden Strom an, der ganz Saint-Denis in Gefahr bringt.

In vino veritas? Ja, aber manchmal ist die Wahrheit gut versteckt....

Bruno Courrèges, einziger Polizist, Gourmet, Sporttrainer und begehrtester Junggeselle von Saint-Denis - wird an den Tatort eines Mordes gerufen. Ein Kriegsveteran ist tot aufgefunden worden, gefesselt und mit einem in die Brust eingeritzten Zeichen. Hinweise fehlen. Die eingeschalteten Polizeibehörden wollen Bruno von den Ermittlungen ausschließen. Doch dieser nutzt seine Ortskenntnisse und Beziehungen, ermittelt auf eigene Faust und deckt die in der Zeit der deutschen Besatzung wurzelnden Ursachen des Verbrechens auf.

Im Wein liegt die Wahrheit - aber es gibt Wahrheiten, die will man lieber nicht wissen. Im sechsten "Bruno"-Roman geht es um einen glorreichen Eisenbahnraub durch die französische Résistance und die unrühmliche Verwendung der Beute. Um die Enthüllungsstory einer französischen Historikerin über Frankreichs Nuklearverteidigung, die kurz vor Drucklegung entwendet wird.

Für Brunos Geschmack ist im malerischen Saint Denis im Périgord entschieden zu viel los: Ein spanisch-französisches Gipfeltreffen ruft die Separatistenbewegung ETA auf den Plan, eine Gänsefarm wird von Tierschutzaktivisten attackiert, und dann ist da auch noch die archäologische Ausgrabungsstätte, deren deutscher Forschungsleiter nach einem prähistorischen Menschen sucht.

Bruno ist neu Mitglied einer Wein- und Trüffelgilde, eine große Ehre. Doch lange kann er die pâtés und Monbazillacs nicht verkosten, denn er wird an einen Unfallort gerufen. Auf dem Anwesen des ältesten Gildenmitglieds ist eine Studentin, die in dessen Gemäldesammlung recherchierte, nach einem nächtlichen Rendezvous zu Tode gestürzt. Oder war es in Wahrheit Mord? Eine Spur führt Bruno zum Schloss einer berühmten Tänzerin und Résistance-Heldin: Josephine Baker.

Brunos Vorgesetzten lässt ein Mordfall bis heute nicht los. Im Wald bei Saint-Denis hatte man die Leiche eines jungen Mannes gefunden, die nie identifiziert werden konnte. Bei einem Besuch im Prähistorischen Museum in Les Eyzies sieht Bruno, dass sich aus Knochenfunden rekonstruieren lässt, wie ein Mensch zu Lebzeiten aussah. Er schlägt vor, dieses Verfahren auch bei dem ungelösten Mordfall zu versuchen. Damit beginnt endlich die Suche nach dem Mörder.

Bruno steht vor einer ungewohnten Herausforderung: Er soll in Pamelas Kochschule Feriengästen lokale Spezialitäten beibringen. Die Messer sind gewetzt, die frischen Zutaten bereit, doch die prominenteste Kursteilnehmerin fehlt: die junge Frau eines britischen Geheimdienstoffiziers, die sich auf Empfehlung ihrer Stieffamilie im Périgord erholen wollte. Bruno spürt sie auf - in einem vermeintlichen Liebesnest, das jedoch bald zum Schauplatz eines Doppelmords wird.
