Samuel de Champlain est le véritable père de la Nouvelle-France. D’origine métisse, Riel est né dans la colonie de la rivière Rouge, dans l’actuel Manitoba. Aîné d’une grande famille, il quitte les siens à 13 ans pour venir étudier à Montréal. De retour chez lui 10 ans plus tard, Riel, par son charisme et son éducation, s’impose rapidement comme leader et s’engage dans la défense des Métis. Il réussira, non sans mal, à faire valoir plusieurs de leurs droits et contribuera à la création de la province du Manitoba, mais sera finalement jugé pour haute trahison et exécuté en 1885.
