Samuel de Champlain est le véritable père de la Nouvelle-France. D’origine métisse, Riel est né dans la colonie de la rivière Rouge, dans l’actuel Manitoba. Aîné d’une grande famille, il quitte les siens à 13 ans pour venir étudier à Montréal.
