In his review of Salvador Dali's first autobiography, George Orwell declared that "One ought to be able to hold in one's head simultaneously the two facts that Dali is a good draughtsman and a disgusting human being." Whether or not one agrees with the famous author's assessment, Orwell captures the polarizing nature of Salvador Dali, and the extent to which his undeniable technical virtuosity often brushed against his penchant for provoking his audiences (not to mention provoking long-entrenched standards of "proper" taste).

José de Ribera nació en Játiva (Valencia) y fue bautizado en aquella localidad el 17 de febrero de 1591. Hijo del sastre Simón Ribera y de su esposa Margarita Cucó, sus padres le enviaron a Valencia para que siguiera la carrera de Letras en aquella Universidad, pero su afición a las Bellas Artes le hizo cambiar los libros por los pinceles y asistir al taller de su paisano Francisco Ribalta (1565-1628). Ribalta abrió al joven Ribera el camino para llegar a convertirse en uno de nuestros mejores pintores.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (Albi, 1864-Malromé, 1901) nació en el seno de una de las familias aristócratas más importantes de Francia. Su familia se instaló en París en 1873. En 1878 sufrió la rotura de su fémur izquierdo, al año siguiente la del derecho, razón por la que sus piernas sufrieron un desarrollo anormal a causa de una enfermedad congénita que le provocaba falta de calcio; conservó un torso normal, pero las piernas no le crecieron.

Nació el 25 de octubre de 1881 en Málaga. Su padre se encargará de iniciarlo en el dibujo y la pintura. Hasta el año 1898 utilizó los apellidos paterno y materno para firmar sus trabajos, pero desde 1901 firmó solo con el apellido de la madre. Con 10 años realiza sus primeras pinturas y a los 15 ingresa en la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Barcelona. En 1904 se establece en París. Conoce a su primera compañera, Fernande Olivier.
