Entendemos por arquitectura barroca un estilo de construcción y decoración característico, que comienza a instalarse en Europa a finales del siglo XVI y perdura sin trascendentales variaciones hasta la segunda mitad del XVIII. El siglo clave, pues, del arte barroco es el XVII. Las fronteras exactas de este modo arquitectónico no pueden determinarse, pues, aunque tradicionalmente venía concediéndose a Lorenzo Bernini la paternidad simbólica del estilo, la historiografía actual descubre antecedentes barrocos en hombres de tanta importancia como Miguel Ángel.

Nos encontramos ante un producto artístico plena­mente oriental. El problema de que los árabes no fueran creadores de formas artísticas propias no resta mérito alguno a su labor. Las soluciones arquitectónicas por ellos adoptadas habían sido empleadas por persas y bizantinos desde muchos siglos atrás, pero lo cierto es que sólo los árabes lograron hacer de este arte un arte universal.

Dentro de los estilos que rodean los últimos años del siglo XIX sólo uno merece la calificación de original: el modernismo catalán, exaltado en la figura de Antonio Gaudí. Esta manifestación va a ser, como es natural, el vértice y piedra de toque de la selección presente.
