Henry Bonaventure Monnier naît à Paris en 1805. Personnage truculent du 19e siècle, il va exercer son talent et sa verve dans les domaines artistiques les plus divers. Se révélant très doué pour le dessin, il quitte à 16 ans son emploi de petit gratte-papier chez un notaire pour aller travailler dans des ateliers célèbres, notamment celui du peintre Gros, qu'il doit bientôt quitter en raison de son esprit gouailleur et mystificateur. Très vite il est attiré par le dessin satirique et compose alors une série d'ouvrages ridiculisant les mœurs de l'époque, qu'il illustre de ses caricatures et de ses croquis pris sur le vif.

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, to a prominent Boston Brahmin family, he moved to England in 1914 at the age of 25 and went on to settle, work and marry there. He became a British subject in 1927 at the age of 39, subsequently renouncing his American citizenship.
