Nineteen-year-old Sarah wakes up one morning feeling that something big, something irrevocable has happened on Black Crag, a small seaside village of around a few hundred people. To this remote community it seems as though the rest of the world had gone to sleep - aeroplanes no longer criss-cross the sky, the radios have gone silent and the ferry no longer brings their supplies. At first glance, that is. Because when the young boy who is our protagonist chooses it as a refuge to escape a difficult family situation, the reality he finds is quite different. Baked with the help of a mysterious blue-haired shop assistant, are sweets and pastries with immense powers, capable of changing lives.

In a mysterious apartment filled with ghosts, our unnamed narrator attempts to explain this to her child - how do I talk about this? she wonders. The truth must become something beautiful. We must begin with a fairy tale. And so she begins to construct a beautiful fairy tale for her child - one that begins with a strange baby boy whose nails grow too fast and whose skin smells of soil. As he grows from a boy into a man, a plague seems to follow him everywhere.

Sarah spends her time worrying about how she will be able to get a permanent academic position, and also doing ketamine and watching 80s movies with her best friend, Nathan. Nathan was the only person to believe Sarah when she was assaulted by a fellow student during her first year. Sarah reported it to the university and to the police, but nothing happened. 'He's such a good guy.' 'He wouldn't do that.' 'Were you drinking?' When Nathan is found dead of an alleged heroin overdose, Sarah is convinced it is a murder but, once again, the police don't believe her.

A man's body is found viciously murdered behind a neighbourhood's 24-hour corner store, sending shockwaves through the tightknit community in this small-town neighbourhood. All the victim's family and bystanders want is to make sense of this brutal crime and move on with their lives. But all five-year-old Layla wants is a pet donkey. As the killings continue, Layla's world unravels.
