Fourteen-year-old Tom Röschenberg has inherited a ghost train and its members of the undead are very lively! And it's a suspenseful time for our young Ghostsitter: Vlarad the vampire has consumed too much hamster blood and has now turned into one, and Wombie the Zombie's hundredth deathday is coming right up. But the ritual for celebrating Wombie's deathday is no easy task: It requires a voodoo dagger, a magic ring, and an enchanted cauldron, and if Tom and his undead friends don't perform the ritual in time, Wombie will turn to dust.

Ghoulia, Auntie Departed, and Uncle Misfortune are ready for a vacation. They pack up their things and head to Fancy Manor to visit Cousin Dilbert and Auntie Witch. Fancy Manor is nice and rundown, and it’s on Lake Mystery, providing lots of opportunity for swimming and other summer fun. But there’s a hitch in the plan. Because Fancy Manor seems abandoned, the town plans to reclaim the property in just a few days, unless a living heir comes forward.

They’ve witnessed so many strange things in the graveyards that they’ve formed a group called the Zombie Hunters! But they hunt more than just zombies—they track ghosts, hobgoblins, and witches, too. Each member of the group keeps a diary of the group’s activities.
