Hercule Poirot stood on the cliff-top. For here, many years earlier, there had been a tragic accident: the broken body of a woman was discovered on the rocks at the foot of the cliff. When an elephant escapes from the London Zoological Gardens, Holmes and Watson become embroiled in one of their strangest cases yet. Engaged by a jeweler in fear for his life, the trail leads Sherlock to two secret societies, each pursuing the eight ruby elephants said to unlock a vault containing the lost Nizam diamond. Standing in his way are some deadly foes: the Archangels, assassins in top hats and tailcoats, hell-bent on the murder of the great detective and the acquisition of the treasures of the realm.

In the fourth and final book in the Before Watson series, Sherlock Holmes and his companion and assistant, Dr. Poppy Stamford, embark on their greatest adventure yet. They are charged with solving not just one case, but three.

The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was a radio show which aired in the USA from 1939-1950, most famously starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. Episodes from 1939 through 1943 were written or adapted by Edith Meiser from the books of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. From 1943 onward, most shows were written or adapted by the team of Dennis Green and Anthony Boucher or Green and Leslie Charteris, who replaced Meiser who left the show over her disagreements with a sponsor over the amount of violence in the program.

It is January 16, 1950, the time 6:28 p.m. A freight train just outside of a west Texas town gains speed and rolls through the gathering dust. Inside a gondola car, a hobo crouches in the corner as the brakeman comes toward him. As the brakeman tries to throw him off, a scuffle ensues and the hobo jumps off. At 2:55 a.m. on the morning following the freight train incident, a rancher named Banker noticed a small coupe parked in the shoulder of the road with Okalahoma licence plates. Banker turned his spotlights on the car and saw a man slumped down on the driver's seat dead.
