10. Mai 1869: An diesem Tag wird Geschichte geschrieben – amerikanische Geschichte, Technologie-Geschichte, Eisenbahn-Geschichte... und nicht zuletzt die Geschichte des Wilden Westens. Es kommt zum Lückenschluss der ersten transkontinentalen Eisenbahn in Nordamerika. Sie ist die längste Eisenbahnstrecke der damaligen Zeit und bringt Veränderungen für Menschen und Tiere. Sie ist der letzte Nagel zur Eroberung des Wilden Westens, der geprägt war von Abenteuern und dem Kampf ums Überleben.

Der 10. Mai 1869 verändert das Gesicht und die Geschichte des Wilden Westens auf bis dahin unvorstellbare Weise. Von einem Tag auf den anderen wird der gleichmäßige Tritt der Ochsen, die ihre Planwagen über die Prärie ziehen, abgelöst vom Schnaufen der Dampflokomotiven und vom Rattern der Räder auf Eisenbahngleisen. Nördlich des Großen Salzsees treffen mitten in der Wüste die Linien der Central Pacific Railroad Company und der Union Pacific Railroad Company nach atemberaubendem Wettkampf aufeinander.
