When World War II breaks out, Suzanne’s dream of attending the Royal Academy of Music crumbles. Determined to do her bit, she joins a swing band that entertains troops in some of the worst-hit cities of Europe. Giovanni Lonardi era un emigrante veronese che viveva in Svizzera. Nell'aprile del 1915, tornato per un breve soggiorno in Italia, è stato arruolato e spedito al fronte. Lascia così moglie e tre bimbe a carico dei suoi poveri e vecchi genitori. Capita in un reggimento tra i più martoriati del fronte e scampa alla morte molte volte quasi per miracolo. Si comporta valorosamente tanto che si guadagna la croce di bronzo e il grado di sergente. Nel 1917 durante una rischiosa missione è fatto prigioniero e viene internato in un campo di prigionia in Austria.

Jasmin Pascal-Andersson, Lieutenant in der schwedischen Armee, wird bei einem Kriegseinsatz schwer verwundet. Vierzig Sekunden lang steht ihr Herz still. Nach der Reanimation leidet sie an Halluzinationen, die Ärzte attestieren ihr ein posttraumatisches Stresssyndrom. Zurück in Stockholm entscheidet sie sich, aus dem Militärdienst auszutreten, um ein ruhigeres Leben zu führen. Sie findet einen Job als Sekretärin, bringt wenig später ein Kind zur Welt. Alles scheint in bester Ordnung.
