Between bouts of babysitting a nine-year-old alien with a sometimes - dangerous crush on her, Jet spends her days training for the Rings, the televised Nirreth obsession that involves watching humans navigate perilous courses filled with both real and virtual enemies. As Jet is the first female human ever to run in the Rings, everyone fully expects her to die in the first round... or at the very least, to do so poorly that the judges, the infamous Rings Board, will kick her out even if she survives.

Jet is a 19-year-old skag, one of the humans still living free on Earth following an invasion of creatures called the Nirreth. Squatting in the ruins of Vancouver, Jet and her family eke out an existence underground, hiding from the culler ships. No one knows where the ships take the people they abduct, but they never return. When a culler finds Jet, she may discover the truth the hard way...and end up living among the very creatures that have enslaved her.

In the middle of the American Second Civil War, born with a face that is half black and half white, Jetta belongs nowhere. In New Orleans, where she lives with her grandmother after her parents' death, she is believed to be a demon come to curse them all. Everywhere in the town, the blacks - or people of any color - are being persecuted and, one day, Jetta is moved by the white military and shipped outside of the city walls to live in a closed ghetto along with the rest of New Orleans' many blacks. But Jetta is not black.

When the daughter of Greece's premier singer fails to sing as expected, she finds out about a biker group of women. But will she manage to find the elusive Orosa, the bikers' motovlogger, when all she has to go on are random street-sightings of criminal behavior, when her family is opposed to her following this path, and when her dad's employer wants to keep her as she was for marketing purposes?
