Nació el 7 de noviembre de 1867 en Varsovia (Polonia), hija de un profesor de Física. En 1891 partió hacia París, donde se matriculó en el curso de Ciencias de la Universidad de la Sorbona. En 1894 conoció a Pierre Curie, quien se enamoró de ella y celebraron su matrimonio en 1895. Fue la primera en utilizar el término radiactivo. En 1898 el matrimonio anunció el descubrimiento de dos nuevos elementos: el poloni y el radio. En 1903 les concedieron el Premio Nobel de Física por el descubrimiento de los elementos radiactivos, que compartieron con Becquerel.

From the 1880s to the 1950s, the Harvey Girls went west to work in Fred Harvey's restaurants along the Santa Fe railway. At a time when there were "no ladies west of Dodge City and no women west of Albuquerque," they came as waitresses, but many stayed and settled, founding the struggling cattle and mining towns that dotted the region. Interviews and historical research help recreate the Harvey Girl experience. The accounts are personal, but laced with the history the women lived.
