The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle was the second of Hugh Lofting's Doctor Dolittle books to be published, coming out in 1922. It is nearly five times as long as its predecessor and the writing style is pitched at a more mature audience. The scope of the novel is vast; it is divided into six parts. It won the Newbery Medal for 1923. It was one of the novels in the series which was adapted into the film Doctor Dolittle.

The story picks up from the end of Blue at the Mizzen when Jack Aubrey receives the news, in Chile, of his elevation to flag rank: Rear Admiral of the Blue Squadron, with orders to sail to the South Africa station. This new novel, unfinished and untitled at the time of O’Brian’s death, would have been a chronicle of that mission, and much else besides. As the novel opens, we are able to visit these friends we have followed so very far in a rare state of almost perfect felicity.

Rachel Vinrace, Virginia Woolf's first heroine, is a motherless young woman who, at 24, embarks on a sea voyage with a party of other English folk to South America. Philéas Fogg, un excentrique gentleman anglais, dont le seul passe-temps est de lire les journaux et de jouer au whist, vient juste d'engager un nouveau domestique, trop heureux d'entrer au service d'un vieux garçon casanier.

Axel Lidenbrock est le neveu d'un éminent géologue et naturaliste allemand, le professeur Otto Lidenbrock. L'histoire commence à Hambourg, dans la maison du Pr. Lidenbrock.

Rachel Vinrace embarks for South America on her father's ship and is launched on a course of self-discovery in a kind of modern mythical voyage. The mismatched jumble of passengers provide Woolf with an opportunity to satirize Edwardian life.
