At 3:35 am, Greta Emmett wakes to a call from the Emergency Centre. Her husband's fall alarm had been activated five minutes ago and since then he's been unresponsive. He isn't in bed beside her and on further inspection she realises he's not even in the house. By 6:00am at St Aldates police station DCS Rebecca Wainwright, multi-decorated hero of celebrated investigations, is reading notes on her new team.

Feeling his age as his birthday rolls round once again, Inspector Montalbano decides to cheer himself up by dealing with a young driver's road rage in his own unique way. But his joy is short-lived, as at police headquarters he receives an angry phone call from a supermarket boss; there's been a robbery at his store, and Montalbano's colleague is treating him as a suspect. On arrival at the scene, Montalbano quickly agrees with Inspector Augello that this was no ordinary break-in.

The murderer has a perfectly logical reason for his kills. Logical, but insane. Wounded soul and single dad Nick Clayborne uses a radio scanner to listen in on private conversations. It’s virtually his only adult contact. He fills notebooks with what he hears in hopes of an eventual book deal. Then three of those strangers are murdered. Panicking, he reaches out to a long-time favorite he's been listening in on for years.

As an inexplicable series of events occur Lucie wonders if her long-dead lover could have staged his own disappearance under the cover of that fateful day. Or could it be that someone else is stalking her, or that her vivid imagination is playing tricks?
