Following the death of the parents of Jonathan's four-year-old nephew Joshua, Dick and his partner find themselves in a new role: parents. As if fatherhood didn't bring enough of a set of challenges, the mother of one of Joshua's new friends is murdered, sending Dick on a trail to find out who killed her and why. With a list of suspects ranging from a lesbian ex-partner to the boy's race-car-driver father, Dick is soon embroiled in a case so complicated that child-rearing begins to look easier than solving the case.

But has Housman succumbed to German influence? Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are sent to investigate and come up with a finding unexpected to them. Mycroft lets their finding pass, but Watson is then witness to some Machiavellian political machinations from Mycroft as he deals with Irish rebel Roger Casement.

There has been a major tragedy in the Cooper family and no one's sure if they can get past this one and go on with their lives. But still they try. Meanwhile, Matt takes the case of a man who wants to locate a former inmate of San Quentin prison - a man he shared a cell with for nearly three years. Matt has warned this client that if he wants to find his former cellmate to do him bodily harm, then he'd better find himself another private investigator.

Three trees, known as the Peacock trees, are blamed by the peasants for the fever that has killed many. Squire Vane scoffs at this legend as superstition. To prove them wrong, once and for all, he takes a bet to spend the night in the trees. In the morning he has vanished. Is he dead, and if so who has killed him? The poet? The lawyer? The woodsman? The trees?
