The Tomb is a fictional short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft, written in June 1917 and first published in the March 1922 issue of The Vagrant. It tells the story of Jervas Dudley, who becomes obsessed with a mausoleum near his childhood home. The Tomb tells of Jervas Dudley, a confessed daydreamer. While still a child, he discovers the padlocked entrance to a mausoleum belonging to the Hyde family, whose nearby mansion had burnt down many years previously. Jervas attempts to break the padlock, but is unable.

The tomb is the story of Jervas, a little boy whose whole life begins to revolve around the tomb of the Hyde family. A childhood spent sneaking out to sleep beside the tomb eventually turns into a young adulthood of sleeping in a tomb with his name on it. After a stormy night and after heading for the tomb, he turns back and sees the Hyde mansion, which had been burnt down in previous years, aglow with splendor. Once Jervas went inside, the spectral mansion sets ablaze, and his vision is broken by his father. Jervas comes to find out he had never been inside the tomb at all.

"I can't believe I've been an archaeologist all these years and all I have to show for the thirty plus years is a couple dinosaur bones. I feel I've been nothing, but a disgrace to all archaeologists abroad. When will my luck change?" said a sad Dr. Moreland. Sometimes, when we are at our lowest points in life, some kind of intervention steps in and our luck changes. That is what is about to happen to Dr. Moreland the moment he pulls his revolver from his desk, and points the gun to his head.
