Caterina, pressoché analfabeta, veniva aiutata nelle sue opere di carità da un gruppo di uomini e donne, fratelli spirituali, detti la "Bella Brigata". A questi stessi dettava le sue lettere, spesso dettandole contemporaneamente a più "scrivani". Scrisse circa 380 lettere, durante gli ultimi dieci anni della sua vita.
