Could taking a year off the booze really make my life better? Would a holistic approach of treating my mind, body, and spirit give me the peace I craved?

When you’re intimidated or overwhelmed, it’s easy to turn to alcohol to feel more relaxed and outgoing. But what if you want to cut back or cut out alcohol from your life? What do you do on dates? How do you soothe worries and hang-ups? And how the heck do you get up the nerve to be naked with someone new?

Of course, a medically supervised detox is always highly recommended. However, not everyone takes this route, at least not every time they need to sober up. I sure didn’t. If I went to the county detox or hospital every single time I went through what I came to call "The Fear", they would have probably just started turning me away, or I’d be broke. I was a chronic relapser, so I’ve had a lot of practice. My pattern was to take down a liter of vodka per day - plus other miscellaneous party favors when money was good - until I got too sick to work, function, or continue drinking.
