Les Payne, the renowned Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist, embarked in 1990 on a nearly 30-year-long quest to interview anyone he could find who had actually known Malcolm X - including siblings, classmates, friends, cellmates, FBI moles and cops and political leaders around the world. His goal was ambitious: to transform what would become hundreds of hours of interviews into a portrait that would separate fact from fiction.

Fearful of prison time - or lynching - for violating Indiana’s anti-miscegenation laws in the 1940s, E. Dolores Johnson's Black father and White mother fled Indianapolis to secretly marry in Buffalo. Her mother simply vanished, evading an FBI and police search that ended with the declaration to her family that she was the victim of foul play, either dead or sold into white slavery.

Over 225,000 African-Americans go missing every year. There are few clues and the police do very little to find them. What role does color play in this equation? Why are young, unarmed, Black men being shot down in the streets? Are the police just doing their jobs? Or is there something more horrible going on? And what about all those disappearances? No one vanishes without a trace. There are Black men and women still missing since the 1970s and 80s. How could they just disappear without a trace? Where are the cold case files?
