The narrator discovers that many years ago a meteorite crashed there, poisoning every living being nearby; vegetation grows large but foul tasting, animals are driven mad and deformed into grotesque shapes, and the people go insane or die one by one.

There was once a road over the hills and through the valley, but people ceased to use it. The old folk have died or gone away, and the farms and villages are slowly decaying back into dark woods and narrow clearings. A family died up there.

This short story first appeared in science fiction magazine Amazing Stories and tells of a meteorite crash in rural Massachusetts...and of the horrific results. It was one of HP Lovecraft's most popular works for its combination of science fiction and horror, and it was the author's personal favorite short story.
