Young John McFarland is accused of the violent murder of a man who has just left all his worldly goods to the accused in his will. The evidence against the great detective’s client mounts and Holmes candidly admits to Watson that, perhaps, the case Lestrade is building is as sound as Holmes believes it is untrue.

A young lawyer asks Holmes to clear him of the charge of murdering a rich man soon after preparing the man’s will. Inspector Lestrade is convinced of the young attorney’s guilt and believes he has finally bested Holmes, but by the use of forensic science and a bogus house fire, Holmes is able to exonerate the young lawyer while proving he was set up.

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are discussing the lack of interesting new cases when a man bursts into the room. The panicked young man is McFarlane and he believes that he will be arrested for the murder of 52-year-old Jonas Oldacre. Oldacre’s burnt remains are found behind McFarlane house, the day after the builder Oldacre came to the lawyer McFarlane to draw up his will and made him his sole beneficiary. McFarlane is arrested as the main suspect. Holmes believes that the young man is not guilty and does his best to prove it.

Behind a great mansion lie ashes that small of flash. The wealthy owner has disappeared after a visit by his new heir.
