Glenn Boulton, der Leiter des Covent Garden Market, bittet Sherlock Holmes um Hilfe. Der Markthändler Peter Bowman ist erschossen aus der Themse gezogen worden. Wenige Tage zuvor wurde der Restaurantbesitzer Sydney Alexander erstochen aufgefunden. Im Gegensatz zur Polizei vermutet Mr. Boulton, dass es einen Zusammenhang zwischen beiden Morden gibt, schließlich gehörte Mr. Alexander zu Mr. Bowmans Stammkunden. Mr. Boulton äußert den Verdacht, dass die beiden Ermordeten Mitglieder einer Schmugglerbande waren oder einer Schmugglerbande in die Quere gekommen sind.

Auf einer Raumstation wurde ein Gewerkschaftsvertreter ermordet. Die beiden tödlichen Messerstiche liegen zeitlich zwei Stunden auseinander. Das gibt Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson Rätsel auf. Allerdings nicht lange.

Bei Scotland Yard ist ein Kollege der französischen Polizei zu Gast: Dr. Bertillon stellt sein modernes biometrisches Erfassungssystem vor. Schon bald kommt die kriminaltechnische Neuerung auch Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson in die Quere.

The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes is the final set of twelve (out of a total of fifty-six) Sherlock Holmes short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle first published in the Strand Magazine between October 1921 and April 1927. The first British edition and the first American edition of the collection were both published in June 1927. However, they had slightly different titles. The title of the British collection was The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (hyphenated "Case-Book"), whereas the title of the American edition was The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes ("Case Book" as two words).

The Return of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of 13 Sherlock Holmes stories, originally published in 1903-1904, by Arthur Conan Doyle. The Adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans is one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is one of eight stories in the cycle collected as His Last Bow, and is the second and final appearance of Mycroft Holmes.
