Living Jesus' way - the sermon on the mount

When John Donne stood in the pulpit of St. Paul's, the lyricism of a great poet fused with the devotion of a holy man. There were no prepared sermons, for he spoke only from notes, and what he said was later transcribed from memory. But the sermons were overwhelming; for behind him was a lifetime devoted, as poet, philosopher and devine, to God.

To write a book about Jesus is a challenging task; to live a life like Jesus' is more challenging still. Though not primarily a work of theology or of spirituality, this popular history intends to help the words and deeds of Jesus come alive for contemporary readers. In Jesus' day, he was a polarizing figure; one was either for him or against him.

Having chosen twelve of his many disciples to become his ‘apostles’, Jesus gathers them together to teach them intensively about the attitudes, lifestyle, ethics and principles of his new discipleship community – which would later become the church. This vital teaching is recorded primarily in Matthew and Luke and is the focus of this series. The apostles will be the first leaders and founders of the church in the future.
