Mary Gauthier was 12 years old when she was given her Aunt Jenny’s old guitar and taught herself to play with a Mel Bay basic guitar workbook. Music offered her a window to a world where others felt the way she did. Songs became lifelines to her, and she longed to write her own, one day. Then, for a decade, while struggling with addiction, Gauthier put her dream away and her call to songwriting faded. In October 1942, SS guards at the Sachsenhausen concentration camp violently disbanded a rehearsal of a secret Jewish choir led by conductor Rosebery d'Arguto. Many in the group did not live to see morning, and those who survived were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Only one of its members survived the Holocaust. Yet their story survives, thanks to Aleksander Kulisiewicz. An amateur musician, he was not Jewish, but became friends with d'Arguto in Sachsenhausen. D'Arguto tasked him with a mission: to save the musical heritage of the victims of the Nazi camps.

I’ve always loved music (who doesn’t?!) and during the peak lockdown of early the Covid Times™ I got guilelessly and guiltlessly into the random “30-day music challenge” choices that friends, family, and faceless internet chums were posting. I wanted to hear more about what they chose and why… and I really wanted to have something I could talk about on Zoom calls that would actually be worth the oxygen (memes are no fun when you talk about them!) I suppose there were a few of us. The period from 1963 to 1970 was arguably one of the most dynamic periods for social change in the West. Some of us were either blessed or cursed to be teenagers during this eight-year period. Amid a hail storm of raging hormones and psychological uncertainty, I found that the Beatles were there to guide me through a personal upheaval that I wasn’t able to manage on my own. Their music and quirky media personae lent a steadiness to my teen years where there otherwise was none.
