Siegfried wächst bei dem Nibelungenzwerg Mime im Wald auf. Dort versucht Mime, die zerbrochenen Trümmer des Schwertes Notung zusammen zu schmieden. Mit dem Schwert soll Siegfried den Lindwurm Fafner erschlagen, der den Ring der Macht in seiner Drachenhöhle bewacht. Als es Mime nicht gelingt, schmiedet Siegfried das Schwert selbst. Er erschlägt den Lindwurm und trinkt dessen Blut, das ihn unverwundbar macht. Ein Waldvogel rät ihm, den Ring an sich zu nehmen und weist ihm den Weg zu Brünnhilde, die hinter einem Feuerwall schläft.
