Westfalen, Mitte der 1930er-Jahre: Die Entrechtung der Juden ist weit fortgeschritten, aber einige können weiterhin unbehelligt leben und ihren Berufen nachgehen. Zu ihnen gehört der Cellist Erich Krakau. Das Blatt wendet sich, als der junge Fritz Eberle, Mitglied der SA, Krakaus Stelle im Stadtorchester einnehmen will. Getrieben von Hass entsteht eine Hetzjagd, an der sich bald eine ganze Stadt beteiligt: Kleinbürger, Emporkömmlinge und Spießer. Hineingezogen werden auch Freunde Krakaus, die alles für ihn riskieren.

Der inhaltliche Kernpunkt in "Das Brot" ist die von Gewohnheit geprägte Kommunikation eines Ehepaares, wohingegen in "Requiem für einen Freund" der gewohnte Gedankenaustausch mit dem besten Kumpel betrauert wird. "Marguerite", "Die traurigen Geranien" und "Später Nachmittag" charakterisieren die ewige Annährung zwischen Mann und Frau.
