Having survived the final trials of the academy, Johanna and her friends begin their careers amidst the stars as midshipmen in the Alliance Navy fleet. As they take their first steps, hidden forces continue their work to destabilize the very alliance so many have fought to protect. Their plans will empower a madman, whose murderous attempt to usurp power will incite war for the first time in centuries.

After years of intense training in the star system of Havoc, five cadets are nearing graduation from the Academy which trains officers for the Alliance Navy, the force responsible for protecting humanity in a region of space far from Earth. Having survived every test the Academy has to offer, including a deadly encounter with rogue cadets that was never planned, the cadets must now embark on a new series of challenges that will have them face to face with aliens, meet high powered politicians, and tested for bravery under deadly stress.

In a new region of space, the unified purpose of the human colonists has existed for over 800 years, but is now threatened by diverging interests from different factions. If there is one element holding the various colonies together, it is the Alliance's space navy which has guarded them all from previous alien invasions, hunted pirates, and enforced interstellar laws. Young adults from all the member worlds compete for entry into the academy, there to be trained and proven worthy of being officers in the honorable institution.

Sergeant Anki Paro, a Luthian Marine, has been anxiously awaiting the call to deploy. As her path towards war draws near, Anki begins to notice a shift in balance as her society prepares itself for imminent destruction. Questions of misplaced loyalties lead her to wonder if the world she is trying to save has any real intentions of surviving. As Brendle and Anki's worlds collide, they find themselves in an unlikely alliance to try to stop the full might of the Greshian Empire before there's nothing left to fight for.
