It has been with us through every historical period - from the indigenous tribes of premodern America, through colonial societies, to the modern era of today. The study of sports has become an examination of how women, minorities, and ethnic and religious groups have influenced the American experience and how historical factors, such as gender, ethnicity, race, and religion, provide a more complete understanding of our common identity.

One year before Jackie Robinson broke the color line in major league baseball in 1947, four black players joined the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Rams to become the first professional football players of African-American descent in the modern era. While blacks had played on professional teams in the early days of pro football, none had joined a team since 1934.

The Forgotten First chronicles the lives of four incredible men, the racism they experienced as Black players entering a segregated sport, the burden of expectation they carried, and their many achievements, which would go on to affect football for generations to come.

It was called Freedom Summer, and they came to Mississippi by the hundreds, white and black, young and old. Their aim was elemental: secure the right to vote for blacks in the state. The hurdle they'd face would be daunting. Follow a reporter as she journeys to Mississippi and encounters the echoes of family and the struggle for civil rights.
