Montague Rhodes James (Goodnestone, 1 de agosto de 1862 - Eton, 12 de junio de 1936), anticuario, medievalista y escritor británico de cuentos de terror. Su infancia transcurrió entre altas y tupidas bibliotecas repletas de libros antiguos, en su mayoría textos religiosos, en el condado de Kent, Los padres de M.R. James, optaron por brindarle una educación acorde con sus preferencias y lo enviaron al prestigioso Eton College. Continuó sus estudios en la ciudad de Cambridge, en el King's College, otro colegio al cual sólo unos pocos tenían acceso.

El señor Wraxall viaja a Suecia con motivo del libro de viajes que está escribiendo. Una de sus paradas es la mansión de De la Gardie, toda una antigüedad. Entre las reliquias se encuentra el retrato de Magnus, el primer De la Gardie, por quien siente un vivo interés; incluso querrá visitar el mausoleo de la familia.

Mr. Anderson viaja a Viborg en busca de algunos documentos para su investigación sobre la historia de la Iglesia de Dinamarca. Llega a una casa hotel, “The Golden Lion”, y se hospeda en el cuarto 12. Conoce al señor Kristensen, el dueño y gerente, y al señor Jensen, un abogado hospedado en la habitación 14, junto a la suya.
