One of the seven Sager siblings who were orphaned on the Oregon Trail, Matilda later survived the 1847 massacre in which her adoptive parents, the missionary Dr. Marcus Whitman and his wife, and her two brothers were killed. The attack, a pivotal event in Northwest history, led to a war of retaliation against the Cayuse Indians and the extension of federal control over the present-day states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and parts of Montana and Wyoming. In this rare volume, Matilda left her account of that tragic event in the pioneer west.

Long considered one of the most vibrant and compelling accounts of the battle of Gettysburg by a young resident of the town. Fifteen-year-old Matilda "Tillie" Pierce saw Union general Buford enter town with his cavalry, saw the rout of the first day of fighting, and the Confederates streaming through the town. She gave water to many Union soldiers, including General George Gordon Meade, the new commander of the Army of the Potomac.

In the summer of 1941, the Atlantic Charter marked the first of many meetings between President Franklin Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill. The Charter laid out eight articles promoting ideals such as equality among nations and promising post-war freedom of the seas. It was ironic that in a conference concerning war aims, the United States was still a neutral country and the British were far from sure they could win the war against Germany.

Winston Churchill never trusted Hitler. When France fell to the Nazis, Britain was alone in their fight against Germany. There were no Allies, no second front...there was no one. Only the Axis powers and neutral countries that did not want to get involved in the war. Standing alone, Churchill rallied the British people by convincing them it would be better to fight for their freedom than to surrender. So began the Battle of Britain and what Churchill would call their nation's finest hour.
