In Mansfield Park wächst die aus schwierigen Verhältnissen stammende Fanny Price bei ihrer wohlhabenden Tante und deren vier Kindern auf. Dort wird sie mehr geduldet als geliebt. Nur ihr Cousin Edward begegnet ihr mit Zuneigung. Doch das beschauliche Landleben gerät aus den Fugen, als die Londoner Bonvivants Mary und Henry Crawford auftauchen und mit ihren Kabalen und durchtriebenen Verführungskünsten alles auf den Kopf stellen.

Es war wohl zu verfänglich seinerzeit, ein Werk durch Nennung des vollen Namens urheberrechtlich zu kennzeichnen, noch dazu, wenn es so persönlich wird. Jane Austens Schilderung des Lebens in "Mansfield Park" weist in einer Ausgabe von 1816 lediglich darauf hin, dass die Autorin ebenfalls für "Stolz und Vorurteil" verantwortlich zeichnet. Dabei geht es eigentlich ganz gesittet zu, wenn auch nicht unkompliziert und manchmal überzeichnet.
