"Maktub não é um livro de conselhos - mas uma troca de experiências.", Paulo Coelho. Durante um ano, Paulo Coelho teve uma coluna diária chamada Maktub no jornal Folha de S.Paulo. Nela, publicava curtíssimos textos sobre os pensamentos e as inquietações de diversas culturas. Como resultado, o autor recebia diariamente diversas cartas de leitores dizendo o quanto as colunas os inspiravam e que alguns chegavam a recortar o jornal para guardar seus textos preferidos.
Foi daí que surgiu a ideia deste livro.

The Nose is a short story by Nikolai Gogol and was published in 1836. It tells the story of a man (known as Major Kovalyov) who lost his nose in an extraordinarily strange incident. He soon realizes that his nose dressed as a man of high rank and pretending to be a human being: It goes to church and can talk to Kovalyov. He tries to get the nose back on his face in many different ways but the nose refuses to return.

White Nights is a short story by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, published in 1848, early in the writer’s career. The story tells about unfortunate young man who is lonely and shy. He strolls the streets of 1840s Saint Petersburg contemplating his solitude when he happens upon a young woman in tears.

The Devil is a novella by Leo Tolstoy, was published in 1911, after the writer’s death. It tells the story of a married landowner slowly overcome with unrelenting sexual desire for one of the peasants on his estate. Before his marriage, he had many sexual relationships with women while living in St. Petersburg. He inherited an estate in the country after the death of his father and he decided to leave the city. In his new life, he lives with his mother. She thinks it is time for him to get married.

David Copperfield is a novel by Charles Dickens and was published in 1850. The story is told in the first person by David Copperfield. Now he is a grown man and tells us the story of his youth and his journey of self-discovery. He had an unhappy childhood, and his father died before he was born. We hear his story until his middle age when he becomes a successful novelist. His journey is full of adventures and numerous friends and enemies.

The Shadow Line tells the story of a young man whose dream to be a captain of his ship comes true accidentally. He should command a boat from Bangkok to Singapore filled with sick passengers. His crew gets infected by malaria, and he finds out the medicine necessary to save them is missing deliberately after a couple of days wandering in the sea with no wind in sight. His mate convinces him that the ghost of the previous captain, who before his death turned insane and wanted to take the ship down along himself and the crew, has cursed them.

The Duel is a novella by Anton Chekhov and was published in 1891. It tells the story of the debates between a scientist, a government worker, his mistress, a deacon, and a physician about wits and ethics. This verbal battle leads to a violent contest: the duel. The story begins with Ivan Andreitch Laevsky - a government worker - who has run off with a married woman, Nadyezyhda Fyodorovna to a small town in the Caucasus. While there, he forms several acquaintanceships with a colorful array of characters.

The Man That Corrupted Hadleyburg is a short story by Mark Twain and was published in 1899. It tells the story of the destruction of a small town (known as Hadleyburg), which is known far and wide as an honest and moral community. The people of the town enjoy the reputation of being honest. They isolated themselves and their babies from outsiders; when their children are still babies, keeping them sheltered from any kind of temptation.

Father Sergius is a short story by Leo Tolstoy and was published in 1911. It tells the story of a young prince - known as Stepan Kasatsky - who becomes a priest. In the court, he falls in love with Countess Mary Korotkova and becomes engaged to her. But soon he discovers his fiancée was once a mistress to Tsar Nicholas I. This incident devastates him and he decides to leave the court and becomes a monk. As he is an ambitious high achiever and excels in everything he sets his mind to, he is ordained to the priesthood after three years and takes the name Father Sergius.
