Traversée de ce qui tue la passion et représente une tentation masochiste pour les femmes : le mariage. Antérieures à ses textes psychanalytiques maintenant bien connus, ces deux nouvelles sont les premiers textes romanesques de Lou Andreas-Salomé jamais publiés en France.

Die Autorin schrieb diese Novelle um 1900, nach einem langen Aufenthalt in Paris. Deutlich erkennen wir in dieser Geschichte autobiographische Züge. Es geht um eine junge Russin, die nach einem langen Studium endlich zu leben beginnt und nun versucht, das Wesen der Liebe zu ergründen. In einer heimlichen Romanze meint sie, dieses Ideal endlich gefunden zu haben.
