This production of The Lost World, based on the novel by Arthur Conan Doyle, was first broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 1975, and amongst the cast are Francis de Wolff, Gerald Harper, Carol Boyd and the renowned radio actor Carleton Hobbs. The story follows a 19th century expedition to enter the rumoured lair of animals thought to have died out millions of years before - a terrifying world of pterodactyls and other 'prehistoric monsters'.

Released in 1912, it tells the story of an expedition to a plateau in the Amazon basin where prehistoric animals still survive. The character of Professor Challenger was introduced in this book. The novel also describes a war between Native Americans and a vicious tribe of ape-like creatures.

On a zoology expedition up the Amazon, Professor Challenger has made an inexplicable discovery. Back in London, his claims are ridiculed throughout the professional community. Reluctantly, he recounts to Journalist Edward Malone, "Curupuri is the spirit of the woods, something terrible, something malevolent, something to be avoided. Edward Malone is a newspaperman with an ultimatum: in order to marry the girl of his dreams, he must go on a grand adventure and make a name for himself. He is directed to interview one of the most irascible and volatile characters in all literature - Professor George Edward Challenger. By the time the week is out, Edward Malone is one of an elite expedition led by Professor Challenger into an area that has been isolated from all the natural changes of time. It is a lost world of gigantic insects, warring barbaric tribes, and dinosaurs.
