The last summer before the end of World War II, Walter Proska is posted to a small unit tasked with ensuring the safety of a railway line deep in the forest on the border with Ukraine and Belarus. On August 15, 1965, the life of Nils Henrik Ellefsrud is forever changed when two police officers show up at his door with bad news. His cabin on Patricia Lake in Alberta, Canada, has exploded and burned down, two people are missing, and the only survivor is his daughter, TJ. A short time later as he sits by his daughter’s hospital bed, Nils has no idea what has happened to his wife and TJ’s nine-year-old twin brother.

There are “many options” for a new kidney, and Emilio plans to utilize them all. When patients ahead of Nick on the waiting list start mysteriously dying, the authorities are called in to investigate. Meanwhile, Nick’s condition digs up family secrets better left buried.
