Like the ancient Polynesian explorers, migrants aboard the mothership Kon-Tiki endeavor to travel great distances using celestial navigation. A sudden cataclysm renders continental United States into a forbidden zone known as The Big Scorch. Believing the danger to be past, the remaining officials attempt to pick up the pieces and conduct the country's business as usual. General Leonard Bardick discovers that instead of one nation, this time an enemy intends to wipe out the entire planet.

Victimized by an unknown alien race and their inexplicable game only weeks before, a small community in northern Los Angeles is preyed upon again by the same aliens and the massive, deadly wall of energy that surround their neighborhood. Led by the same group as before—a charismatic Hispanic female cop, a Hollywood movie grip, a nurse, and a college professor—they struggle to come to grips with the aliens’ agenda, their own difficulties and strategies for survival, and the psychotic plans of an obscure group of religious fanatics based in the area.
