There once was a dog with a keen sense of smell. She was known far and wide as Detective Dog Nell. Peter's dog, Nell, has an amazing sense of smell. Whether it's finding a lost shoe or discovering who did a poo on the new gravel path, her ever-sniffing nose is always hard at work. But Nell has other talents, too. Every Monday she goes to school with Peter and listens to children read. So who better to have on hand when they arrive one morning to discover that the school's books have all disappeared?

Those two bad men, Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh, are back! They may be in the city instead of the farm, but they haven't changed their thieving ways. In fact, they're even more ambitious. They're planning to steal a monkey from the zoo and use it to pinch the Queen's crown. It's a pity for them that a certain crime-busting ladybird is holidaying in the very same city...and she's got a good idea that will ensure the dastardly pair won't get away with it!

Schnell scheint klar, dass nur einer als Täter in Betracht kommt: Konrad. Der ist neu in der Klasse und hat noch keine Freund*innen gefunden. Statt auf dem Schulhof verbringt er die Pausen im Klassenraum. Wer soll es denn sonst gewesen sein? Konrad jedoch ist sich keiner Schuld bewusst. Und als die Kinder auf die Idee kommen, in einem Gerichtsverfahren über Schuld und Unschuld zu verhandeln, kommt heraus: Es ist alles ganz anders, als sie dachten.
