The title story of this collection - a devilishly ironic riff on H. P. Lovecraft's "Pickman's Model" - was nominated for a World Fantasy Award, while "Probiscus" was nominated for an International Horror Guild award and reprinted in The Year's Best Fantasy and Horror 19. In addition to his previously published work, this collection contains an original story.

Ein kleines Haus in einer Vorstadtsiedlung. Die Leute, die dort leben, sind ganz durchschnittliche Alltagsgeschöpfe. Zum Beispiel: Die Hausbesitzerin Frau Dillinger, ihr Mann, ihre Tochter und der Untermieter, Herr Perlmann, der sich in seiner Freizeit damit beschäftigt, seltene Insekten zu züchten und der fasziniert verfolgt, wie aus Raupen zuerst Puppen und dann prächtige Schmetterlinge werden. Die Symptome, die Herr Dillinger an sich entdeckt, scheinen zunächst auf eine ganz alltägliche Erkrankung hinzuweisen, aber der Arzt ist ratlos. Zudem gehen merkwürdige körperliche und seelische Veränderungen an ihm vor.

Growing up with a menacing drunk for a father and a grief-stricken mother, a girl spends her 1980s childhood staring at the television to escape the depression and looming violence that fill her suburban home. After winning a modelling competition, she dedicates herself to becoming a placid image onto which anything can be projected, a blank slate with a blank stare. Earning enough in Paris to retire in her 20s, she buys a studio in Montreal and retreats from the world, cultivating her existence as an image through her virtual reality avatar. But then her mother develops cancer.
