Tarbell was among the first American women to earn a college degree, graduating in 1880. Fiercely independent, she first took a job at a school in a different state. After returning to her family home, she fell into a writing and research assignment with a monthly newsletter.

Abraham Lincoln was born into poverty in a log cabin and was raised on the frontier primarily in Indiana. He was self-educated and became a lawyer, Whig Party leader, Illinois state legislator, and U.S. Congressman from Illinois. In 1849, he returned to his law practice but became vexed by the opening of additional lands to slavery. He reentered politics in 1854, becoming a leader in the Republican Party, and reached a national audience in the 1858 debates against Stephen Douglas.

The 19th-century eccentric Ida C. Craddock was by turns a secular freethinker, a religious visionary, a civil-liberties advocate, and a resolute defender of belly-dancing. Arrested and tried repeatedly on obscenity charges, she was deemed a danger to public morality for her candor about sexuality. By the end of her life Craddock, the nemesis of the notorious vice crusader Anthony Comstock, had become a favorite of free-speech defenders and womens rights activists.

Ida Copeland's life was full of drama. This includes father's mysterious death by shotgun, an escape from Italy to Britain at the end of the 19th century, nursing in World War I, fighting Britain's would-be dictator, Sir Oswald Mosley, and becoming one of the first female members of Parliament. It's a story worth listening to.
