Hansel and Gretel is the classic tale of a brother and sister who get lost in the forest with some surprising results. After being abandoned by their wicked stepmother in the forest, the two children try to find their way home. Suddenly they stumble upon every child's dream: a cottage made of candy! But inside lives a wicked witch who she is not as nice as she at first pretends to be and has an evil plan! Can Hansel and Gretel escape from the dastardly witch and find their way home?

Hansel and Gretel is set in medieval Germany. There appears to be some confusion around whether the wicked stepmother is actually the children's biological mother. There is also synergy between the stepmother and the witch—they both die at the same time and could be "related" metaphorically. It was commonplace, back in those darker times, to abandon offspring if there were too many mouths to feed. So a bit strange for our modern understanding, but perfectly acceptable back then! And as we all know, stepmothers are always "evil", speaking as one myself.

Intended for parents to listen along with their children: This is a beautifully descriptive retelling of the original Hansel and Gretel story set in modern-day Montana. Told by Gretel herself, it weaves into the fairy tale wonderful new oddities and characters.

Hänsel und Gretel werden von ihren Eltern als Strafe in den Wald geschickt, um Beeren zu sammeln. Bei einsetzender Dämmerung kommen die Geschwister vom Heimweg ab, entdecken ein Pfefferkuchenhaus und probieren hungrig davon. Darin wohnt eine alte, hässliche Hexe, die Kinder in Lebkuchen verzaubert. Hänsel und Gretel ahnen langsam, das ihnen Gefahr droht. Mit großer List stoßen die Kinder die bösartige Alte in ihren eigenen Ofen der explodiert und retten sich dadurch. Endlich werden auch alle Kinder von ihren Eltern wiedergefunden, die voller Sorgen im Wald nach diesen suchen.
