When Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm published their Children's and Household Tales in 1812, followed by a second volume in 1815, they had no idea that such stories as "Rapunzel", "Hansel and Gretel", and "Cinderella" would become the most celebrated in the world. Yet few people today are familiar with the majority of tales from the two early volumes, since in the next four decades the Grimms would publish six other editions, each extensively revised in content and style.

These 200 tales were collected by the Brothers Grimm in the early nineteenth century. They traveled throughout Northern Europe and some of Scandinavia and had oral storytellers tell their stories. You will be able to see that many themes are the same with different characters. In fact, there are really many ways to tell the same story!

Grimms' Fairy Tales, originally known as the Children's and Household Tales, is a German collection of fairy tales as told by the Grimm Brothers (also known as Brothers Grimm), Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, first published on 20 December 1812. Lange jaren geleden was er in het plaatsje Hamelen een ware rattenplaag gekomen. Overal kwamen die brutale dieren en niets was meer voor hen veilig. De heks is de enige die de toren kan bereiken, door Rapunzel's lange haar te gebruiken als touw om omhoog en omlaag te klimmen. Op een dag wordt een prins aangetrokken door het geluid van Rapunzel's zang en besluit om haar haar te beklimmen om bij haar te komen.
